Photography
I find abandonments to be visually stunning places, and I have long been drawn to their unique surreal and serene atmospheres. When you are in an abandoned place, you cannot help but wonder about what it must have been like before and about all the people whose lives were affected by it. All those people had led entire lives; they each had their own stories as vivid and complex as your own. You are confronted with the smallness of each of us in face of the world. As these places disappear, they take their histories with them. Through my photography I hope to capture my feelings about abandonments, as well as to document them before they are gone.
Forest Haven Asylum
Forest Haven was a mental asylum in Laurel, MD. Asylums are often depicted in the media as dark, creepy places where patients are subjected to cruel and inhumane treatment. You may think of this depiction as exaggeration, but for the residents of Forest Haven, it was their reality
Six Flags
In 2000 the park opened as Jazzland, but was purchased by Six Flags and renamed Six Flags New Orleans in 2003. The park closed its doors for good due to damages caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Lincoln Beach
Lincoln beach amusement park, contains a lot of good memories, it's a place that brought joy to many people in the community. However, its memory is bittersweet as it operated during the time of segregation and the Jim Crow Laws of the south.
